Curtains with Blackout Liners
Curtains with Blackout Liners in Doha | Doha Curtain Shop
Quick Summary: Curtains with blackout liners have a dense second layer sewn behind the front fabric, so the room goes dark, the afternoon sun stays out and your furniture fades more slowly. Doha Curtain Shop makes them to measure for apartments and villas across Doha, with blackout or thermal liners, and can add a liner to curtains you already own. Book a free home visit on WhatsApp.
Your curtains look fine, but the bedroom still glows at 6 am, the living room heats up by mid-afternoon, or you can see shapes through the fabric after dark. The fix is rarely a thicker fabric. It is a liner, fitted properly. Here is how liners work in Doha homes, which type to choose and how we measure and fit them.
Why Liners Matter in Doha’s Sun
A curtain fabric on its own, however thick it feels, still lets light and heat pass through the weave. A liner, also sold as blackout lining, is a second, densely woven or coated layer that hangs as one with the front fabric and stops that passage. Where the sun beats on west- and south-facing glass through the long summer, that second layer is the difference between a room you can use at 4 pm and one you avoid.
Heat is the part most people underestimate. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that medium-weight drapes with a white backing can reduce heat gain by up to 33%, and advises keeping curtains closed on south- and west-facing windows during the hottest hours. That is why the pale, reflective side of the liner should face the glass.
A liner will not replace your air conditioning, but it lowers the load on it. More in our guide on whether curtains reduce AC bills in Doha.
What a liner gives you besides cooler rooms:
- Real darkness for sleep. Night-shift workers, families with babies and anyone sleeping through daytime hours in Ramadan get a properly dark room. See our bedroom curtains and kids’ room curtains.
- Privacy after dark. Unlined curtains show silhouettes once the lights come on. A liner makes them opaque.
- Slower fading. Strong sun bleaches sofas, rugs and the curtain fabric itself. Read why curtains fade faster in Doha.
- Less glare and a little less noise. Useful for TV rooms and home offices. Two layers dampen street sound slightly, but they will not soundproof a room.
Choose Your Liner: Blackout, Thermal Blackout or a Layered Set
Whether you call them lined blackout curtains or blackout curtains with lining, the choice comes down to three options. For curtains with thermal lining, choose the middle one.
|
Option |
What it does |
Best for |
|
Blackout liner |
Dense, coated layer that stops light passing through the curtain |
Bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms |
|
Thermal blackout liner |
Blackout layer with an insulating coating that slows heat passing through the glass |
West- and south-facing living rooms, villa majlis, floor-to-ceiling windows |
|
Layered set (sheer + blackout) |
Two separate panels on a double track: sheer for daylight, blackout for night |
Rooms that need soft daytime light and full darkness at night |
Not sure which suits you? Tell us the room and the direction the window faces and we will recommend one. For layered sets, see our guides to layering sheer and blackout curtains and layered curtains.
Which Curtain Fabrics Can Have a Blackout Liner?
The liner does the blocking and the front fabric does the styling. We line:
- Linen curtains: linen looks light and natural but is see-through on its own. A liner keeps the look and removes the glare.
- Cotton curtains: an easy everyday fabric that gains full blackout and a better hang.
- Velvet curtains: a heavy, formal drape that suits large living rooms.
- Sheer curtains: best used as the daytime layer of a layered set.
Very delicate or loose-weave fabrics sometimes need a different approach, and we will tell you honestly on site. For more options, see our curtain fabrics guide.
Add a Liner to Curtains You Already Own
Wondering whether you can add blackout lining to existing curtains? Often you can. If you have curtains you like but the room still glows, many can be re-lined or fitted with a separate blackout liner instead of being replaced. At your home we check the heading type, the fabric weight and whether your rail or rod can carry a heavier curtain, then quote the fix. That is handled through our curtain alteration service. If the curtains are past saving, we make new custom curtains with lining to your measurements (made-to-measure curtains).
Stop Light Leaks: Fit Matters as Much as Fabric
Even a very good liner cannot help if light slips round the edges. Most leaks come from the same few things: a curtain barely wider than the window, a rail mounted right at the frame, a gap in the centre and a hem that stops short. Eyelet headings can also let more light through along the top than pleated headings on a track.
The fixes are straightforward. Make the curtain wider than the window so the sides overlap the wall, mount the track or rod high and close to the ceiling, overlap the centre panels and let the hem fall close to the floor. This is why we measure on site, and why our installation service fits the track as part of the job. If you want to take your own measurements first, follow our window measuring guide.
Lined Curtains for Apartments and Villas Across Doha
We work from our office in Muaither and fit curtains across Doha. Tower apartments in The Pearl, Lusail and West Bay often have floor-to-ceiling glass facing one strong sun direction, so a thermal blackout liner on that side and a lighter layer elsewhere often makes sense. Villas in Al Waab usually need a mix: full blackout in bedrooms, thermal liners on sun-facing majlis and living-room windows.
We also cover Msheireb, Al Wakrah, Al Rayyan and Al Khor. Planning a whole home? See our pages for apartments and villas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add blackout liners to curtains I already have?
In most cases, yes. Curtains with a pleated or tape heading can usually be re-lined or fitted with a separate liner, but we check the heading, fabric weight and rail strength first because a lined curtain is heavier. Book a free home visit and we will tell you whether re-lining or replacing is better value. See our curtain alteration service.
Do curtains with blackout liners keep a room cooler in Doha?
They reduce the heat entering through the glass, though they do not replace air conditioning. The U.S. Department of Energy says medium-weight drapes with a white backing can reduce heat gain by up to 33%. Results depend on the window direction, how closely the curtain fits and whether you keep it closed in the hottest hours.
What is the difference between blackout lining, thermal lining and interlining?
Blackout lining blocks light. Thermal lining is built to slow heat transfer, and thermal blackout lining does both. Interlining is a separate soft layer sewn between the front fabric and the lining, which adds body and insulation and mainly suits large, heavy curtains. For most bedrooms a blackout liner is enough, and for sun-facing living rooms we suggest a thermal blackout liner.
Will a blackout liner make my room completely dark?
The liner blocks light through the fabric, but light can still creep in at the top, sides and bottom. A wider curtain, high mounting and a good overlap in the centre close most of those gaps. That is why we measure on site.
Which side of the liner faces the window?
The pale, reflective side faces the window and the front fabric faces the room. This reflects heat back towards the glass. With a separate hook-on liner, hang the pale side towards the window.
How much do curtains with blackout liners cost in Doha?
There is no single price, because every curtain is cut to your window. The cost depends on window size, front fabric, liner type, heading style and extras such as motorisation or a double track. Message us on WhatsApp with the rooms and approximate window sizes and we will guide you, and the exact price is confirmed after the free measurement.
Can curtains with blackout liners be motorised?
Yes, as long as the track and motor are rated for the curtain’s weight, because liners add weight. We specify the track at the home visit. See our motorised curtains.
Do you measure and install in Lusail, The Pearl and West Bay?
Yes. We offer free home visits, measurement and installation across Doha, including Lusail, The Pearl, West Bay, Al Waab, Msheireb and Al Wakrah, and we also serve Al Rayyan and Al Khor. Free delivery and installation applies in most areas, so confirm yours when you message us.
How do I clean lined blackout curtains in Doha’s dust?
Vacuum them gently with a brush attachment and spot-clean marks. Check the care label before washing, because coated liners can be damaged by heat: avoid tumble drying and hot ironing, and have heavy lined curtains dry-cleaned. See our curtain maintenance checklist.
